Bethany had a friend over who had never baked a cake. Actually – they had never used the oven in their apartment. So I thought it would be fun for the girls to make a cake from scratch.
Bethany’s friend learnt that flour is not a flower, that the cake we were making needed sugar and that cake batter needs to be cooked (seriously!). Even her mother got excited when we put the cakes into the oven to bake. Meanwhile Bethany and I remained quietly amused by their reaction to seeing a cake made from scratch.
Once the cakes had baked and cooled, I helped the girls make a batch of buttercream icing. They chose the colours they wanted and I let them go wild icing their own cakes. The base colour was (of course) pink.
Then they went wild with the different decorating tips to create their own unique designs.
Bethany’s friend was so proud of what she created. It was her first real time making anything baked, and she got to take home her own cake to show off and eat as well.
Meanwhile, Bethany’s final creation from the day looked like this:
Not bad for a 5 year old I don’t think. How about you?
