2D Soccer Ball Cake

What do you do when your local cake decorating supply shop is constantly out of the 3D soccer cake tin?

I improvise with a 2D version.

Funnily enough, I had to research the soccer ball pattern. It isn’t a straight forward black/white pattern like one might think… especially one who doesn’t follow this particular form of footy (I’s an oval ball girl). I found a hexagon template, and the pattern order of the soccer ball and applied it to the surface of the cake. The linework is done with black buttercream and tip 3, while the patches of the soccer ball are done with black and ‘white’ buttercream icing using a tip 18. Bordered with green buttercream grass down the bottom, this was a nice easy cake to ice – the best kind.
