I love the spontaneity of street art. I was rather excited a week or so back when I saw not only a Pac Man but a Space Invader pop up just down the road from me made entirely from tiles. What can I say – kid of the 80’s fondly reminiscing thanks to some curiously intriguing 8-bit art … that’s me!
Naively I assumed this was commissioned art and I loved the colour and quirky vibe it was adding to the neighbourhood. C’mon – who would take the time, patience and effort to ‘graffitti’ with ceramic tiles?
And yet, I have learnt the hard way that this beautiful and unusual street art has in fact been beautifying Hong Kong illegally.
Camera in hand I ventured to the site of Pac Man to find this …
Saddened and disappointed I noticed a giant red space invader nearby had also disappeared. Such a shame the Hong Kong government are so efficient and so unappreciative of the innovation of whoever this wonderful artist is.
I ventured to where I knew yet another 8-bit tile art had been, and thankfully that one had yet to be removed…
Street fighter was still busting his moves on the side of an apartment block on the border of Tin Hau and Causeway Bay. Look at the detail that had to be put into making this street art. It’s awesome and very creative. At least, that’s what I think…
I’m still on the hunt and hopeful I will find more of the 8-bit art in my everyday travels …
Whilst I know it will be short lived I have been thoroughly enjoying these tile graffitti. Thank you Mr unknown tile artist … thank you!
